Weekly Tzedaka Torah
Rabbi Chaim Vital writes in Pri Eitz Chaim (Shar Shabbos, Chapter 4) the following; My Teacher (the Holy Arizal) may his memory be blessed, would say that all the Mitzvos that a person does are inscribed upon his forehead. Each and every Mitzvah is written with a different letter, the the letter that is specifically associated with that particular Mitzvah. If a person does a single Mitzvah then the letter of that Mitzvah glows. If he then does another Mitzvah, than the letter of the first Mitzvah goes away and becomes swallowed in his forehead. However if he does the Mitzvah of Tzedaka, [the letter] does not become swallowed up inside, like the lights of the other letters, rather it continues to glow for the entire week upon his forehead and does not immediately become swallowed up, as in the mystery of ‘His righteousness (Tzidkoso – Charity) remain forever’.
We openly see here the importance of the Mitzah of Tzedaka and how a person who partakes in it has spiritual light glowing from his forehead for the entire week.

Before a person sets out on a journey he should give charity as it says “Righteousness (Tzedek) shall walk in front of you and then your feet can hit the path.”

We see here that Halacha recommends that a person give charity as protection before setting out on a trip.

Weekly Tzedaka Torah
Binyamin Hatzadik was a manager of a charity fund. Once during a year of famine he was approached by a woman who requested financial support. Binyomin Hatzadik swore by the Service of the Bais Hamikdash that the fund was currently depleted. She responded that if he would not support her then she and her seven children would die. Upon hearing this Binyamin Hatzadik went ahead and supported this family from his personal money.
Years later Binyamin Hatzadik became ill and was near death. In heaven the Ministering Angels argued in his behalf in front of Hashem. They said it is known from the Torah that one who sustains a single Jewish soul, it is as if he sustained the entire world. This is the reason why Adom was created alone, to show that each person through his descendants can fill the world. This is also the reason why Hashem rebuked Kayin after he murdered Hevel, “the bloods of your brother are calling out”. He used the plural word ‘bloods’ to imply that Kayin had murdered Hevel and all the descendants that would have come from him. Binyamin Hatzadik had saved a woman and her seven children, the defending Angles demanded to know how he could pass away at such a young age. Their plea was accepted in Heaven and immediately the decree for Binyomin Hatzadik’s death was torn and an additional 22 years were added to his life.

Great is charity that it causes the receiving of the Divine Presence
Sefer Hamidos – Tzedaka 4
One of the main goals of spirituality has always been receiving the the face of the face of the Shichina. We see here that the Mitzvah of Tzedaka is great enough to help this happen.

Weekly Tzedaka Torah
In the neighborhood of Rebbe Yesa lived a pauper whom no one took care of. He was ashamed of his situation and would not beg people for assistance. One day the pauper became weak from hunger. Rabbi Yesa passed by and heard a heavenly voice cry “Justice, justice, a soul is floating towards Me who has not reached his time to pass away! Woe is to the people of his city, that not a single was can be found who will revive his soul!”
Upon hearing this, Rabbi Yesa arose and poured date water and spiced wine into the mouth of the pauper. Sweat broke across the face of the pauper and his life returned to him. Later when Rabbi Yesa asked him what had happened, the pauper related how his soul had departed from him and was brought in front of the throne of Hashem the King. He had wanted to remain there but Hashem had desired to merit Rabbi Yessa with the act of saving him. Rabbi Yesa informed the people of the city and from that day on they cared for this pauper.
Zohar Shemos Page 61B
We see from here that there are many needy people that are ashamed to ask for help and the people of their city are going to be judged and be held responsible for not going out of their way to seek these individuals out and assist them.

Once a pauper possessing only a silver coin worth half a Ma’ah (currency used at the time) passed in front ofRebbe Yitzchak. He requested that Rebbe Yitzchak contribute and supplement this amount, allowing his family to survive. Rebbe Yitzchak replied that all he had was an additional half a Ma’ah and even were he to give that, it would not be sufficient for the family’s survival. After the pauper responded; that combined with his own half a Ma’ah he will be able to manage, Rebbe Yitzchak pulled out his coin and handed it to him.
They showed Rebbe Yitzchak in a dream that he was passing on the shore of the Great Ocean and they were trying to throw him inside. He saw Rebbe Shimon stretch out his hand but he as unable to reach it. Suddenly the pauper came and saved him, pulling him out of the ocean and handing him to Rebbe Shimon. When he awoke, the following verse fell into his mouth, “Fortunate is he who considers the poor; on a bad day Hashem will rescue him.”
